Ashteetlm ahh tmixw
“Ashteetlm ahh tmixw” – the phonetic spelling of the N’lakapamux’stn phrase Songs of the Land is the community project which Savage Society was working on annually in the community of Lytton, until the pandemic and the wildfires. This project is led by Kevin Loring, N’lakapamux, of Lytton First Nation.
Over the last ten years, Savage Society has been producing an annual “Songs of the Land” community project in Lytton First Nation. This work was disrupted by the pandemic and by the devastating fires and flooding in Lytton over the last few years. In 2024 we resumed this project once again to celebrate our people and to heal collectively.
The Council of Spider, Ant & Fly is a contemporary musical theatre work rooted in the N’lakapamux creation story of the same name. It blends traditional storytelling with original music to explore themes of creation, transformation, and the origins of death in the universe.
Building on our decade of working in the community, the process will be a continuation of the work we’ve committed to doing to revitalize traditional Spetakwl creation stories, by embodying them and using theatre as a vehicle for cultural revitalization.
This ancient Spetakwl references prominent landmarks near the village of Lytton and offers explanations for how they were created. Like all of the plays we’ve created in the Songs of the Land project this one will also be partially told in the N’lakapamux’stn language. It will involve a community ensemble and a team of professional artists. We have an organic and community centric way of working. The ensemble is made up of a number of families, and intergenerational participation is a prominent aspect of this work.
